Capris In Sports Sedans

Postby G.Thorpe » Tue Dec 23, 2008 8:09 pm

Thanks guys for all the responses. Is there anywhere/way I can get hold of old records of race meetings. Would CAMS have any info?
I should mention how this all started.....I bought a Capri when I was at uni back in the early 90's. I just liked the shape and thought it was a great looking car. Being a 1600 auto, it was pretty gutless, me being a student, I thrashed the living daylights out of it. It was always breaking down. I took the car to get something fixed....can't remember what....and a guy there gave me an old photo of a sport sedan capri driven by John White. The photo is on the wall of my garage at home and everyone who sees it asks me about it. I'd love to find out a little bit more about the car and see if it is still around.....The car was blue and raced at Winton and was sponsored by Chirnside Panels.

I remember Stuart Hungerfords Capri. That thing was loud!!!!. I think Norm Stokes Capri was red when he ran it.
Derek Van Zelms car was probably one of the more successful Capri's.

Capris In Sports Sedans

Phast Phil bought the ex Woodward Capri in 1988 and raced until 1994. Yellow in colour with a 351 steel head motor and top loader + 9 inch rear. Pretty agricultural by todays standards but managed a 55.8 best at Lakeside and a few wins over the years.

The roof and doors were retained and a space frame Capri built by Phils brother Mal. It is that pretty purple car number 13 that has started racing again last year (with a Chev sadly).

Wish I still had the original as it would be a great historic SS.

Capris In Sports Sedans

Hi there, my son Ashley told me about this discussion. In 1975/7 I ran my Capri/Chev In N.S.W and one trip to Sandown.
In 1977 I sold the car to my brother Andy, who on blowing the engine sold it to people in Tas. I tried to buy it back, to no avail,
and so purchased the 5AD City State Kingswood from Tino Leo. The Capri was later sold to Wayne Mahnken's son, and then
eventually returned to N.S.W. The last time I saw it, was at Amaroo Park many years ago, and I was horrified at what had been done to it. I also remember at Sandown, racing against Grant Walker in a Cologne Capri, similar to Moffats car. I think the Capri shape was one of the nicest ever, and even to day looks good. Ofcourse now there are a bucket load racing in Group N, and I have come across
Capris competing at Supersprints and Hillclimbs.
Good luck with your project, David Birks.

Welcome to the forum David. Good some more "oldracers" are coming out and contributing as opposed to a few us (namely myself) speculating on car histories. It would have to of been more than a few years ago if you last saw it at Amaroo.......

Out of curiosity, do you have any pics of the kingswood with the wall that collapsed on it?

I dont have any photos of the Kingswood with the wall on it, however I do have some of the car as I raced it.

I am not sure who the Capri was sold to in Tas, but I will ask my brother Andy as a matter of interest.

My other brother Mike also ran a couple of S/S, a 4cyl Alfa, which can be seen in one of the shots from Amaroo.
Towards the back of the grid with Daram Printing across between the taillights.
After that came a very quick Alfa GTV, with a 5litre Rover engine, and still with the transaxle.
That was in the late 80s. The car is still around, although the V8 is long gone, and it was back to a V6,
and now I think is a 2litre.

I still have the ex Greg Crick RX7, although I haven't driven it since 1997 when I was part of THE WINGED WARRIORS
who won the E/C 6HR. Ofcourse it has a chev now, not the turbo'd hot air pump.

Cheers Dave.

Hi again, I have spoken to my brother and he can't remember who bought the car, but it may help that when I contacted the chap
who bought it to see if he wanted to sell it, he said the car had been painted the same as Moffats Monza. I think orange, yellow and brown, but I guess if you really wanted to know Wayne Mahnken may know. Cheers.
