Round 4 - Phillip Island - 19-22 September 2013

Darren and Kerry's cars are in the same configuration as last year! How come the different readings and how come the adversarial response to Darren's attempt to go slow past the recording area! There were over twice as many entries for the NSW champs as the Shannon's National SS round! This kind of bully boy tactic won't enhance numbers! Why is the Moto GP given dispensation! They are regularly over 120db !!

Scott, if it was a Vic. State Round the result would have been the same. Nothing at all to do with the fact that it was a Shannons Round. I know in QLD at Lakeside they currently have a stricter noise limit that pretty much precludes SS's in their current form from even looking like racing at the place. The circuit has a system of "noise credits" or similar allowed by the EPA (or whatever organisation monitors them).

Maybe the PI circuit owner wants to make sure he has enough credits up his sleeve for the Moto GP round? (I am unsure of the system in Victoria and how it works in terms of noise).

Once the circuit exceeds their allowed quota of noise breaches or "credits", they are forced into a "please explain" situation and are fined quite heavily for breaches. I'm talking big $$$$$$.

Nothing to do with CAMS or the Promoter, it is the Circuit Owner that has to cough up when the local residents complain.

FWIW, as a fan and a purist, I hate the whole idea of 95dB and I don't agree with it because it's not like we race every weekend! We often have floggers on open exhaust choppers roaring up our street at home on a regular basis that would easily exceed the dB level of a Kerry Baily or Darren Hossack fly by!

Wow... looks like I may have over stepped my mark in regards to the noise issue...

I think many were just surprised that all of a sudden there was an issue when the noise issue had nearly disappeared from the category...

How does PI get away with running F5000's with no mufflers...???

I can appreciate that the track owner may get a huge fine for noise which is dissapointing when they are not personally responsible.
I guess I just disagree with the noise issue given that one of the concerns F1 had when changing engine formats was to keep the noise as part of the spectacle.

Its the noise and the roar of motor racing that I believe draws people to motor racing, its a pity that people not involved in motor racing can have a say on what we do...
Imagine if F1 went to 800hp electric motors and there was nearly no noise, even if they where faster I doubt it would get half as many people watching...

And also disappointing that people buy a house near a race track that has been there since 1956, then complain about the noise???

Anyway, back to the garage to get the car going!

Glad you came around topgear as you were sounding quite negative towards the Nationals.

The Nationals can be a soft target for some but the fact is the meetings are run professionally and if you want to race agaist the best SS in the country then you can do so at the Nationals.

Kerrick also view the Nationals as worthy enough to support as do Dunlop.

In relation to noise I am not surprised that some had issues. One in particular has amazed me that he had not been pulled up till now. I love the Aston but you cannot deny that it is loud. It makes sense to be slightly under the limit as a few clouds seem to increase the reading by a few decibles it seems.

Having said this I too would love to hear louder motor racing as it is part of the 4 dimension spectacle. How drag racing goes about it and selected events like the F1 and MotoGP I do not know but I suspect they ask for an exemption as a major event.
We now have a very interesting series with any of the top 5 able to win the series come end of race 3 at Sandown.

We have actually asked if it is possible to have a copy of the noise readings for all cars distributed so at least you know if your car is close to being in trouble, or if the readings are slowly increasing meeting to meeting.

Yes I understand each circuit has a different meter and characteristics (no different to weights), but at least it will not become a surprise with a black flag mid race.

I hope to join in the Nationals fun soon ;)
