More fibreglassing fun :)

Rear bumper

Rear of door edge. The Gelcoat actually looks black due still having a layer of PVC over it. Gives the deception the part looks a bit weird when in reality its great.

Door skins

The doors will also have the inside section fibreglassed. Both pieces inside/outside will then be sealed together and filled with impact/fire resistant foam. The foam has a strength of 450mpa ish when cured. This will make the doors light but sturdy and hopefully absorb/deflect shock loads in the event of a crash, to keep me safe.

Setup Tyres!! 18's of course :)

More to come soon!

It's been a while but were still moving on :)

Doors Doors and more Doors.....

Alright... so in the last post i showed the outside of the door skin being moulded. This time the inside of the door is being moulded. The idea being that we will mould the outside and inside then stick them together and fill the door with impact / fire resistant foam.

In this picture we have cut the inner door panel off that would normally be there in the road car.

We have made a new piece of sheet metal to fit over the hole left by the road car panel. We have left a rectangular hole in the panel near the locking mechanism so that we can still access the locking mechanism as we are planing to use the road car lock. These doors will swing and operate just like a road car in function.

PVA glue sprayed on ready for gel coat.

Tooling gel coat on, ready for fibreglass. At this point there is fibreglass layed down but we haven't taken any pics yet.

Hi 2JZSS
Are you going to Vacuum infuse the whole car as one piece? (Except doors)
Thanks for sharing you photos

The way we have built the mould is that it will all bolt together as you can see and have pointed out. It will then bolt onto a rotissere / frame that will hold it all together and enable us to do a one piece body. Or to do individual panels. (not bolted to the frame)

I'm not sure which option we will take yet due to the fact we aren't there yet but we atleast we have made the option available.

There are pros and cons for both. Doing a full body you can then cut it out as you see fit. i.e 3 pieces front roof rear. But then the accuracy of the cut comes into play but the body will fit nicer as it has all come from the one piece.

We do like the idea of mulitple parts simply do the the fact it is easier to repair. If you bang a guard just replace the guard etc.

All movable panels will still operate as usual. Bonnet, doors, boot.

We will end up using the vacuum infuse technique id say. Hell you could even chop strand gun it if you wanted too, but that's a bit heavy but atleast it would take a decent hit.

So many options!

How did you find the vaccum infusion? Did the panel come out alright? Any left over resin etc? Did it all infuse?
