Australian Sports Sedan Hall Of Champions

Postby jd yort » Thu Jan 07, 2010 8:34 pm

Been thinking about this thread for a while. Would be good to compile a list of all the Champions for all the series over the years.
Including the State and Circuit series. I am talking State Championships down to winners of the Toledo Tools Series, Northern Beaches Spares, Comalco Wunderlich series, OGP & Indy Supports, O'Brien Alumnium series, Twin City Challenges and even the races that were attended in Malaysia etc.
Falcadore (not sure if he is on the forum?) does a good job updating the Wiki but only at a National level and quite in depth for recent years. I know there is at least 5 State Championship winners regularly posting on here.

Post them up and I will keep updating my original thread.

Great idea for a thread jdyort, well done!!

Queensland Sports Sedan Championship 1993 - 2011

I wish I could remember these back further, but I don't have much in the way of records prior to 1993. Crompo?? Smithy, I can't remember whether it was 1999 or 2000 when Warren won it - I'm sure Trent took a Championship win in the following year or was it the other way around? Maybe a discussion point in the lunchroom at MR Automotive tomorrow mate to try and fill in some gaps pre-1995!! :)

Anyway, here goes:

1993 - Queensland Sports Sedan Championship - Danny Osborne - Chev Monza Chev
1994 - Queensland Sports Sedan Championship - Cameron McLean - BMW M3 BMW (Not sure about this one).

Thought you would know most of the Qld results Falcon EL, particularly late 90's.

I will just keep updating my first post. I know Jeff Barnes won a number of NSW Championships in the Monza and also Anthony McReady has won a couple of NSW titles but will have to try and work out for which years.

Brilliant idea JD Yort!

I tell you want my brain will be working overtime to remember some of the previous NSW state champions. I have a file at work with heaps of old ASSA NSW news letters, I'll go through them next week and see what I can dig up on the NSW scene from the 1990s.

From what I can remember/ figure out so far we have (I am pretty sure most of these will be correct)

O'Brien Aluminium Series Oran Park
1995 - O'Brien Aluminium Series - Des Wall - Toyota Supra - Chev

Thanks 20002 and loser. Keep em coming. I will go through my archives over the weekend and try and dig out some of the earlier results. Pretty sure Baily won at least 6 or 7 State Championships in Tas and Stephen Bell won a few in the Capri. Tony competed in a number of WA State championships and Gordon Mitchell / Dick Ward would have at least 5 between them I would think. Roads should have these covered?

I am pretty sure I remember this correctly but in the early 1990s (before 1993 anyway) the NSW State Sport Sedan Championship was on a bit of a hiatus. Back then the two main state level Sport Sedan race series were the Northern Beaches Spares series run at Amaroo Park by the ARDC and the Race & Rally series run at Oran Park by the NSWRCC. The Street Sedan Association also put on some meetings where Sport Sedans got a run.

It wasn't until there was more support for the small ASSA NSW club with new members that the existing club led by then president Chris Sullivan (who had a rotary powered Cortina and later worked at Oran Park) got a state championship going again.
As far as I recall 1993 was the first year for the "new" NSW state championship which was supported by O'Brien Aluminium.
Graham Smith & Joe Said's Fiats were front runners, Steve Vigurs ran his Rover, Fred Axisa his VK Commodore and there were heaps of Rotaries and Toranas racing too. I think Joe Said won the championship that year, Graham's car spent most of the year in Indonesia racing at Sentul.

I am pretty sure I have got that right but bear in mind I was pretty young when all this was going on so some details maybe missing, maybe some other people can post up what they know.

Updated with 2011 Queensland Sports Sedan Championship, NSW State Championship and Kerrick Sports Sedan Series results.

I'm unsure of the VIC results for 2011, but will check. Has the Championship been run and won?

Also, last year, CAMS championship was won by Muscat but club championship was won by Chambers..

Welcome aboard Cavvy. It about time you finally registered here.

Original post updated with the WA winners. I have to find the time to go through and find some of the holes from my database.

Now Amonfan, when are you going to register and contribute with your Sports Sedan knowledge???
