Why don't Sports Sedans run at Lakeside and QR?

Postby FAMOUS » Tue Sep 13, 2011 10:41 am

I Was standing at Lakeside looking at the full fields of race cars both cams and aasa and wonder why Sports Sedans don't run there ? :(

I would have thought that running at these venues would be benefical in rebuilding the class ?

Apparently most of the people I speak to agree ?

Maybe this would help in getting the numbers of cars up in the state ? :)

Good question.

Do you still have your Supra Famous? If so, where were you on August 12-14th?

We had a National Championship Round at Morgan Park with the most inexpensive Entry Fee ever that included TV coverage and the 14 Entrants put on some amazing racing!!

I expect there are some good reasons as to why Sports Sedans don't race at Lakeside or QR, I've got my own viewpoint on this, but feel free to take the time to attend a QRDA meeting (every third Wednesday 7.45pm Start at the CAMS Offices unless otherwise notified) and you can be involved in the discussions and planning of future Sports Sedan calendars.

If you do still have your car, the question could also be asked why you don't race your own car against fellow Sports Sedan competitors at CAMS State Championship events at Morgan Park? I'm not having a shot at you, I've just never had the opportunity to compete against you!!

FalconEL, wouldn't our cars (especially mine!) have problems with noise limits at Lakeside now?

We down here in Vic fully understand the politics with QR as unfortunatly we have the same with a few of our tracks :(

Noise is a major problem at Lakeside. I tested there last year and was told to modify the exhaust if I wanted to come back. Bob McLoughlin was ordered of the track immediately (he is usually on the limiter leaving the pits) and forced to fit additional mufflers before continuing.

The main reason we don't organize events at QR and Lakeside is no one comes to the meetings complaining about a lack of racing and asking for more events. Between the state and national series there is more than enough racing to keep everyone happy.

To back up FalconEL, if you own a sports sedan and would like some say on the administration of the class in QLD, join the QRDA and come along to the meetings - Simple!!!!

Lakeside would, without doubt, have to be one of the best tracks that I have driven as part of their licence conditions noise restrictions are very tight and as Roverboy said, my car did not meet the requirements. The other point raised was the politics (Lakeside and QR) which I would compare to our current government.
A fantastic venue wasted. Too much money to modify the exhaust, too much pain to race there.

I still don't understand ? How come every other class runs at Lakeside and QR and you people say its politics and money that you don't ? What is different from Sports Sedans to all other classes ?

Why is it that Sports Sedans get 14 cars at a national round and the Production Sports Cars have over 40 at the 50 years of Sports Cars round at Lakeside and there afiliated with Cams ?

Also every class I know has to pay to race ? That seems to be how it works .

How does V8 race at QR with Formula Ford and other classes ?

Is it Politics or is personalities that are in the way ???????

You all spat it about MCM why weren't Sports Sedan at the Shannons Meeting at QR ? Big crowd lots of atmosphere perfect place ? I am sure they would have been welcome ?

Probably the biggest crowd you would get all year outside of the V8s in Brisbane ?

Your questions are valid, no doubt.

I think part of the problem is that most of the other categories such as Improved Production, HQ's, Gemini's (to name 3), don't have a National Series/Championship, moreso a one-off Nationals. In the main, they can concentrate their efforts locally. Less time involved and probably less expense.

As in NSW, we have opened the CAMS State Rounds up to include "Invited Cars" which has been great and given guys that don't quite fit into Improved Production or other categories an chance to compete.

For us, five National Rounds (each of which conflicted with a QLD State Round), plus potentially four State Rounds and other one-offs requires a lot of time involved in car preparation etc.

I agree with you that the class would be better off racing in front of a crowd. I applaud the NSW Association for their efforts in their inclusion at the Muscle Car Masters and next years Bathurst event. These are truly great events to be involved in.

I also see great value in supporting my category when the National Series comes to town as I get to race against the best cars in Australia and try to improve myself in doing so.

As I mentioned, I am awaiting a return phone call from QR. I am more than happy for you to also give them a call to assist in co-ordinating an event that fits in with the existing calendar.

Political issues? I don't think most guys care about the whole CAMS v AASA thing. I ran at a Sprint meeting at Lakeside (under AASA) in Bob McLoughlins Commodore last year, had a blast and came home with all my arms and legs, so it was all good.

Sure, we can buy a battle group at Lakeside or QR, but I am unsure of the support we would receive from competitors. I have been proactive and spoken to two competitors this morning who have indicated that they aren't interested in running at Lakeside. We are not prepared to take the risk in committing the Associations funds to the purchase of a Battle Group without the guarantee that we will re-coup the funds in Entries from a full field of competitors. Until I get 20 competitors email me to suggest they will put their money up, we won't commit financially to this purchase. This however does not stop the enterprising types from putting up some sponsorship money of their own to lock in a spot on a Lakeside or QR programme. There is nothing stopping yourself for example in approaching QR on behalf of the competitor group.

I have also spent considerable time this morning on the phone to NSW and VIC State Delegates. They agree that there needs to be a tidying up of the Forum in many areas/threads as there have been posts of late in various threads that have "not been a good look" to our Series Sponsors. Keep in mind, this is a National Sports Sedan Series Forum and in talking about State Issues we are in fact "guests" on the forum. There is a PM (Personal Message) function available to those who wish to use it.

Why don't Sports Sedans run at Lakeside and QR?

Postby MrBoost » Wed Sep 14, 2011 6:15 pm

This thread is a bit all over the place. No one really explains themselves too well except Falcon EL. Sometimes i and others i have spoken to about this thread go 'huh?' at half the posts.....

I have been to the nsw meetings now for the last 3 or so years. Things got bad down here like they are in queensland. we had 3 or 4 cars turn up at one meeting only a couple of years ago. The nsw lot knew things were bad and needed to do something or we would lose our series.
Basically the way the guys seemed to have turned it around was persistance and a little bit of thinking beyond the 'purist's' eye.
They did countless ring arounds and i mean countless. Chased cars and drivers from as far back as they could find and pushed and pushed. People will race if they have a good class to race and people to race against. you will generally find if a big bunch turn up they have a ball and turn up again, and again. You just need to get that ball rolling. Yes a big part of that was letting in a few 'invited' cars as it gave people more people to actually race against. Although in our average 20+ cars now we have really only ever got 3 invited cars in there.
The biggest thing is getting everyone who talks about wanting to do it, to DO IT AT THE SAME TIME. I see in this thread alone, what 4 cars who seem to want to race? well how about actually turning up and racing? when you add 4 to the current crop, then theres more interest and then another 4 might turn up as they see theres something to compete against. Tell me im wrong but hey..... look at our fields here now?
You can build to going to other tracks when you have the numbers to support going to those tracks. If you dont start somewhere and support what you want.... your never going to get it.
Stop fighting so much against one another, you all want the same final result right? well start working together and stop throwing mud!!! I know most of the qld guys via face not via forum names and they are a fantastic bunch of guys (even if i do lash out at them on here occasionally) so give them a break!!!!!

finally FOR CHRIST SAKE IF YOU HAVE A CAR GET IT OUT THERE AND STOP WAITING FOR EVERYONE ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
