Who's got the most Horse Power?

Postby Phast Phil » Tue Mar 10, 2009 8:17 pm

I have been near, passed, or been passed by most of the cars in the National series.

The strong engines in cars that run pretty hard are: Ricciardello, Hossack, Youlden (now Bob Gills) Mustang, Dean Camm's Honda, Tamasi, Trent Young, Kerry Baily, Jeff Barnes, Graham Smith, Daniel Jameson.

The turbo cars [Young & Smith] go very hard on the rolling starts as does Tamasi's Chev and Axisa's Chev. I reckon these engines would dyno the best numbers, especially in the torque. Ricciardellos Chev just has it everywhere but I reckon it does not do the peak numbers of Tamasi and Axisa.

Interestingly the Chev carburetter engines and the black Mustang carburetted ford have the best peak HP as should be the case for a good NASCAR type carby.

The turbo cars, especially the 20B have the most potential but the DGB gearbox in Youngs car would be the limiting factor, not the engine to see some reliability.

Overall the straight line winner would be the Black Mustang, followed by Tamasi, Axisa and the Audi engine and the Nelson Dodge (another carby) and the Smith turbo when he comes out to play; put Randle in there also. The rest of us are fighting over the same patch of turf give or take 20 HP.

I just found out that my fuel pump was running 10 PSI light compared to the dyno pump last year so I am glad there was a reason why it felt no where near the DYNO figure indicated. I say this to emphasise the fact that the power once the engine is installed in the car can be quite different to a dyno number for a number of reasons. Same pump but it gave a lot less pressure. New pump is same result as dyno pump. Trust me to get a dud last time.

That raises an question for me actually. Why do sports sedans use rolling starts rather then gridded standing starts?

yeah i heard the same thing a few years ago when they started with the rolling starts, too many driveline components were being broke off the start line from the power of these beasts hence the rolling start. Im not a fan of rolling starts i would prefer stand still but if it means more cars running because there not being broke then so be it...

none of the cars do, broken axles, gears, more crashes with standing starts etc etc.

the turbo cars work well off the rolling start coz they are on boost ready to go, and they are still cold (intake temps) after a lap or two intake temps go up and hp drops off.

Love the standing starts, it is always a site seeing the drivers get them off the line (true art whether it be a NA or turbo, more so turbo tho!!). I remember at Baskerville, when the Sports Sedans came down, Barnes was getting great starts in his Monza. But in the final Des Wall broke an axle (in the Torana), off the start and put him out. Rolling starts should ease the carnage off the line, doesnt always happen tho!!
