loved the old DR30's especially like this....why cant we run this sort of kit

Not sure why it open guards aren't allowed, it sure would make heat management at lot easier!
When the Sport Sedans combined with the GT Championship in the early 1980s some cars like Thommo's Merc ran open guards (I suppose he was logged as a Sport Sedan back then, not a GT car?).
I know the rules did at some point change in regards to the shaping of guards, as the cars in the 1980s had more of a sharp wedge look (some of the pics JD Yort posted will illustrate what I mean) compared to the rounded flaring you see these days.

87 was the last year of the box guards. Thommo's Merc had one of the most dramatic box guard set ups at the time. In 88 it was much more sedate. Carling's S1, Tindals Torana and Imrie's Monza all had pretty wild box guard set ups. I recall Imrie's Monza running pretty big guard set up post 88, may have been due to the Thundersport Regs though.

Thanks for clarifying that JD, wasn't sure on what year it was.

Yeah Thundersports allowed extra modifications like wilder body work, bigger wings along with wider wheels (up from the Sport Sedan limit at the time of a 10 inch wide rim).
Really Thundersports was just an exercise to allow some guys with cars that didn't really fit the rules have a run e.g the Monzas and 935 Porsches. What was funny was the Thundersports series was predominately supported by Sport Sedans!!

Do they run a similar series to Sports Sedans in the UK?

What car is that red #77 on the grid at Amaroo? It looks a bit like a late 70s early 80s Celica to me but Im unsure.
