Engine weights

They are cheap, the top level has superseded the engine as they have moved onto a newer model (r6p8), they are great at hte moment but like every NASCAR engine in the past, the suply dries up, would be nice if they stuck to one engine and not move on every fews years which seems to be the case these days.

The only team that uses the new Dodge is Penske, the parts for the R5P7 are still very available and will remain so for a long time. Having access to engine builders such as Ernie Elliot and Mike Ege who developed the R5P7 from it's inception are happy to provide all pertinent information to tailor the engine for a variety of applications. By fitting a longer skirt piston with a thicker ring stack one of these engines has done over 15,000 ks in a road car and can still do a 11 second quarter mile in a 1400kg car on street tyres. They have a cross bolted 6 bolt block with enclosed cam tunnel. The engine was a clean sheet engine and shares no common archetecture with the 340/360 la block. Wayne Jesel has a 370 cube turboed R5P7 in his Magnum truck which runs over 270mph on the Salt. This engine built by Donnie Lewis makes in excess of 1500 bhp. Go mopar, cheap, fast & reliable.!!!!

Don't bother with the YB Cossie, very unreliable and very hard to make good power from. The 80s was a long time ago.
4G63 EVO engines have to be the gun 4 cylinder engine now as they are so strong and make good reliable power with very little effort and the parts are very cheap from USA now.

Could not agree more Steve, on a recent trip to the US I saw a 2009 4G63 with only bolt on accesories and a set of NZ cams make over 600 bhp at under 8500. It was using less than 2 bar on E 85 and had run over 11 hours hard with no problems. The engine builder said he had an O7 evo 8 with a stroked bottom end that had run over 280 mph at Bonnerville. He said an entire package was less than 20k with coolers, pumps and engine management. Cheap power, though not as cheap as a Dodge Lol, but much lighter

Id love the V8 but as my car is under 800kgs adding that much fat would be very nastie.

I have a Semi Spaceframed 240Z set up for a Nissan VQ V6 Engine as I have a sponsor that develops parts for them.
I want to build an LS based Chev but im well short of weight.

This is the car as it came back from Blasters but ive now done 80% of the fab work.

Sportsedan in WA is not very fast so its not hard to be a front runner but im keen to keep running costs as low as possible and that would mean a 600hp V8 would be perfect.
WA SSs are only running 60-62sec laps but I need to allow for a Mates FD RX7 that I look after that will easy run 59s next time out. Ash run 61.1s as a Streetcar class car with lots of lead and 16x7 rims with RE55 Radials and very basic mods, The car is much better now and I want to race with him.
The VQ is 800hp with over 200 more on tap if needed but I think the Block is not upto the job.
What to do? Still thinking 4G63 or 6.0ltr LS.

If 600 bhp will cut it the best way out is the spec engine built by Robert Yates race engines. It is based on the ls2 block at 358 cubes. It has a distributor and carb. Very retro but 625 bhp at7500. This engine can be sourced for under 21k complete with pipes, carb and dry sump setup. The VQ is incredibly robust with the right components but you have much more complexity around the plumbing and engine management . Having said that you do have data logging with the VQ engine. If you want contact details for the Yates engine email me on rakbgood@hotmail.com Cheers

EFI and complex engines are are my daily work and I also have a Turbo 4x4 Racecar so something simple this time around would be nice.
Id build my own engine no matter what way I go.
I just built an Off road race VQ35 engine and the only part that worries me is the open deck block and the crank, Darton has the fix for the open deck but the crank/Mains look very weak.
