New diffuser rules

Postby Toyzda » Thu Mar 11, 2010 4:48 pm

I have questions about the new diffuser rules. Anyone elses point of view would be helpful.

“3.2 (ii) The rear bumper, fascia, or beaver panel may be modified to facilitate the passage of exhaust pipe/s and the fitment of a rear diffuser as detailed in 3.5 (vi). No part of the opening is to be above a horizontal plane passing through the centre of the rear wheel hubs and the opening is to be contained laterally within the inside of the rear tyres (the inner track) with the tyres inflated to a maximum of 30PSI.”

"Opening" meaning rear most point of the diffuser? This has to be inside the inner rear wheels track at the rear most part of the diffuser. Or does "opening" mean the begining of the diffuser section (front most part of diffuser)?

Rear bumber can now have a removed section the width of the diffuser as long as it is not above the centreline of rear wheel hubs?

“3.5 (vi) It is permitted to fit rear diffuser/undertray assemblies provided they do not extend any wider than the original coachwork, or further rearward than 100mm beyond the original coachwork. Any modification to the rear bumper, fascia and or beaver panel to fit a rear diffuser shall be in compliance with Article 3.2(ii).”

rear diffuser and undertray now counted as the same article, or they are still seperate?

Thanks

The "Opening" means the modification you make to open up a section of the rear bumper, fascia, or beaver panel to allow the fitment of a diffuser. The opening can only be as wide as the inside track (inside of the rear tyres inflated to a maximum of 30 psi.). It can only be as high as the centreline of the rear axle.

So, provided your car complies to the 2010 3D Sports Sedan rules in their entirety, you can now chop a rectangular section out of the existing rear bumper, fascia, or beaver panel and go your hardest moulding a diffuser into that.... The diffuser must also comply with the dimensions mentioned in rule 3.10 "Floorpan", where it mentions what you can do with the replacement boot floor section and floor section between the sill panels of the vehicle.

I hope that's right then :) ....... The NSSC tried to keep this ruling pretty simple, it need not be more complicated than that I reckon. If you have any doubts, email Phil Crompton, Mark Nelson or Chris Jackson, but I'm pretty sure how I've explained it is correct.

Sounds right now. I was just confused because another point says no part can be wider than the coachwork and that point had said inner track. I should have realised it meant for the cutout in the bumper.

Thanks.

Falcon EL makes an important point......every car taking advantage of the current tech regs must comply with ALL the new current rules including the safety improvements over the earlier (2006 version I think) SS tech regs. The earlier regs are set in stone for cars that may not be able to be converted, but that means none of the new improvements may be put on a pre 2007 (I think) log booked car.

The opening is the cut out in the rear bumper and that really means the whole diffuser section as a diffuser with a wider frontal opening than the rear would be somewhat ineffective I would think as it would pressurise. I am no physisist mind you but I would keep the same width all the way through.

Does this mean I can't add vents to the bonnet only?
My car is pre 2007 log book.

Correct, you must comply with the earlier rules therefore NO bonnet vents....or any other of the current changes since the earlier ruling unless you re log book with all the current regs including the safety features.

"An automobile for which a Sports Sedan Log Book has been issued prior to 31 December 2006 and which does not comply with the 2007 Technical Regulations will be permitted to continue to compete provided it remains in compliance with the 2006 Technical Regulations in their entirety. Owners of such vehicles should contact CAMS."

I don't see why any re log booking is required, only that you present the car compliant to current OR 2006 rules.

What are the new safety rules for 2007 that are different to the earlier 2006 rules?
If I know these I can then check my car.
