There seems to be a large disparity in the values of Sports Sedans which appears to have increased further in the last decade. Now my memory is a little sketchy so please correct me where I am wrong but in recent years we have seen:
- Hossack Audi for sale in around 180K
- Baily Supra as a roller approx. 30K
- Monterosso Escort 90K
- Ceveri Sierra 70K
- CD's Falcon 35K
- Desisto Gemini 60K
- Ex Richards Falcon 225K incomplete
- De Tomaso Pantera 400K

I put some of it down to the confusion of buyers / sellers caused by the sharp appreciation of traditional Australian muscle cars for which they feel their car is included. I struggle to understand how Steve Vigurs can create a top 5 National car for 100K yet people still believe they will get 40K for an incomplete or stagnant race car which has not raced for 20yrs with minimal notable history.

If the Edmondson Alfa went unsold for approx 200K when on the market, you could argue that outside of the Ricciardello Alfa it has the most history, then that should effectively put a cap on the price of restored historic Sports sedans.

In the end I know that it is only worth what someone is willing to pay but what would people price the top Sports Sedans? I am not talking about any of the old Brock Torana's or GT Falcons that may of made one off appearances but Sports Sedans / GT's.

In my opinion the Des Wall Supra back in Monza form with Brock livery would be the most valuable with probably the exception of the 935's due to their global market appeal.

Thoughts??

Great post Troy.

I too find it hard to fathom that people have to virtually give their "cars of today" away thesedays.

I've got a car that has finished on the podium at a Kerrick Round, numerous Top Tens, knocked out a 2.21's around Bathurst with an amateur driver and with less than 600hp.

I started advertising it at $55K, a fair price for a car that will get you a Top Ten at a National Round. If we had to build my our Falcon again from scratch, doing all the work ourselves, if we took into account the hours involved then we would have no change from $100K.

I was having a chat to Steve Vigurs about this down at SMP, the fact that blokes have to split their cars up to sell them is almost tragic. Guys buy a car as a roller with the best of intentions, then realise how much it will cost them to turn that roller into a racer again!!! If they had have paid a fair price for the whole package in the first place, they'd be out on the track rather than still in their shed!

We do need to to a better job of promoting Sports Sedans though, showing people how much they are worth. I don't know if sometimes we do ourselves a disservice and scare people away from the category when they see the amount of work involved in maintaining our vehicles!

People talk about the "good old days of Sports Sedans" but truly, looking at the lap times produced now compared to way back then, the cars of today would absolutely hose the cars of yesteryear. Perhaps that's not the attraction to some people, I don't know. I know technology has a lot to do with the speed of the cars of today, but maybe the cars of today aren't that bad....

Despite their history, the value of "cars sitting in the shed" should be exactly that. I do understand people wanting to pay for "history" but the price of Historic cars is so far out of control it's not funny. In my opinion, Tony's Alfa and Darren's Audi should be worth at least double the price of the most expensive Historic Car sitting in a shed somewhere.

Yes agreed, we have looked at a few "historic" Torana's and what they are now wanting for cars with little or no history at the moment is ridiculous.

Only a few years ago they were on their way to the recycling yard or the tip.

Anyway if anyone knows of a Torana around the traps that is relistically priced for historic classification, please let me know. ;)

Our car while not up to the pace of the front runners, shows you CAN build and race a car on a small budget if you really WANT to.
