New to SS in QLD with Rx7.

Postby R TECH » Mon Aug 18, 2014 11:26 pm

Hi All,

Was wondering if any of you fine gents could help me out by answering a few questions I have regarding SS in QLD.

I've just purchased a RX7 SS from Vic as a complete roller and looking at joining the QLD series in 2015.

I am a little confused as to the different class's and weight limits as I am trying to decide what engine combo to run.

My car was the 2012 Vic champion in 2500-4000 class utilising a Buick v6.

I am considering either using a Nissan VQ37 V6 or a 4cl/rotary turbo. The car would be too heavy to run as a competitive under 2ltr class car.

Am I right that SS has a min weight of 975kg ?

In QLD they run 0-2000 2001-4000 4001-6000 ? What are the min weights ?

My car previously weighted in at 1040kg with a Buick v6/nascar gearbox/70kg driver.

Any help/advise will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Ant

Hi Ant,

Welcome!!

If you want to run in CAMS events, you need to look at the following regarding Racing Weights:

Ultimately it depends on the engine combination you want to run as to what weight will apply to you.

To establish total engine capacity.
• A multiplying factor of 1.7 applies to forced induction engines.
• A multiplying factor of 1.75 applies to rotary engines.
(iv) The maximum engine capacities are:
Naturally-aspirated reciprocating 6000cc
Naturally-aspirated rotary engine 3428cc
Forced-induction reciprocating 3529cc
Forced-induction rotary engine 2016cc

Vehicle Weights:
up to 1300cc 680kg
1301 – 1600cc 730kg
1601 – 2000cc 780kg
2001 – 2500cc 800kg
2501 – 3550cc 900kg
3551 – 4500cc 975kg
4501 – 5100cc 1050kg
5101 – 6000cc 1125kg

Front-wheel drive: subtract 50kg from the above weights
Multi-valve vehicles: add 75kg to the above weights for vehicles above 2501cc swept volume.
All four-wheel drive vehicles: add 50kg to the above weights.
Note: These are minimum racing weights for rear-wheel drive
vehicles, and include the driver.
These weights may be revised by CAMS.

Most outright cars fit between the 5101-6000cc bracket and therefore have to weigh 1125kg minimum.

Cheers,
CD.

Thanks so much for the info mate.

I did read the cams regs for sports sedans but I also heard in QLD, I guess as this category does not have the luxury of big numbers, they run 0-2000, 2000-4000 and 4000-6000 class's only ?

Obviously I want to have a competitive outfit to suit my budget so 4000-6000 is out unfortunately.

I'd like to run upto 2ltr but I think my car is too heavy for that so 2000-4000 is going to be my best shot.

Anyone have much success with a SR20 or 4cyl turbo in this class ?

Thanks for the help guys.

Yes, I purchased Shane's Rx7.

Hey Ant, welcome to the forum.... Plenty of cars have run or are running turbo 4's and sr20's and been succesful, the Bobby Ervin owned RX7 is a weapon with SR20 turbo power, can run with the front guys at most nationals meets when he choses to run, Nick Smiths RX7 in the build will be running a K series honda turbo 4cyl, should get up and go with a lightweight chassis, and speaking of rotarys Trent Youngs Turbo 20b RX7 was a weapon...

Thanks mate,

Anyone have any further details on Bobby's RX7 ?

Be nice to know approx how much hp his SR is making, what gearbox, wet weight, has it been reliable etc ?

Hi R TECH,

The ervin car when it was reliable made around 650 bhp. It runs a hewland dg300 transaxle and weighs
about 940 kgs last i checked with a driver. It is however a complete national car capable of taking on
tony in the alfa and darren in the audi.

My old Fiat 131 which is now up your way and will most likely run against you in the years to come has a
Fiat 2L turbo in it and it made 620 bhp without much effort and was absolutely bullet proof.
an sr can be very reliable if you use the ve head.

but screw that do yourself a favour and build a honda k24 turbo :) it is actually 2.35L so you could still be in the 2000-4000 class - 2.35*1.7 = 3.995cc and you will have more power than you know what to do with :)

Thanks for the info bud.

That's huge hp for a SR. The rocker arm head is a pain I found in previous cars. I like the 1Jz engine but ideally I would like a 4 turbo to be light/compact and fit into the 2000-4000 class.

The Honda engines are great, I have a supercharged built k20a in my Lotus Exige street car. Will look into it as a option, I guess I would just need to find a suitable gearbox for RWD setup etc I think BYP in Sydney are running a supercharged K24 now in there s2000 so they may have some helpful tips.

Cheers!

I have ported and built a few sr engines now.
There are the de headed ones and while they can make good power its not the same that the vvl heads can make

there are two vvl heads, the p11 and the p12
the p11 has mild cams in ir from the factory and uses a distributor style system
the p12 runs coil on block and comes std with 280 degree cams.
See if you can get hold of a p12 head if at all possible as p11 will cost you alot of money to get close to a std p12.
I have ported both a p11 and a p12 they are not the same even though people will tell you they are.
